A local student at Eastlake High School in Chula Vista, Grace Lee, has recently advanced into the semifinals of the Junior Breakthrough Challenge! Grace is a leader at her school who excels in her academics, taking numerous advanced classes. Within these classes, they demonstrate a clear interest Grace has in the sciences. Consequently, this interest in science prompted her to enter into the Junior Breakthrough video contest.
The Junior Breakthrough video contest is a competition between teens all across the world in which teens submit a 2-minute video they made that explains a college-level topic in life, physics, or math. The competition usually includes 2500 participants from over 200 countries! This video is then uploaded to the official Breakthrough YouTube channel and Facebook page. A teen advances to the next level through the amount of likes their video receives. Grace Lee decided to create a video explaining the physics topic of Fermat’s Principle of Least Time. Using visual demonstrations of origami creatures and three other experiments, she is able to demonstrate how least time applies to real life in relation to light photons. Grace’s video explains least time in a simple manner that allows viewers to easily comprehend the topic in a short amount of time!
Grace explains that if she wins this challenge, her school will be awarded $100,000 and a lab built by the Breakthrough committee, she will receive $250,000 for a secondary school scholarship, and her teacher who inspires her will receive $50,000! Additionally, it would be a great recognition for both Grace and her school. Finally, her school would receive better infrastructure that would increase interest in the sciences at her school.
Though Grace is representing the US through her video, she competes with other science videos from teens all across the world! Therefore, it’s important that as citizens of San Diego, we support Grace Lee to continue onto the final round of the Breakthrough Junior Challenge. To help Grace, visit the links below and like her video! The amount of combined likes on both the Facebook and YouTube videos will determine if Grace advances to finals. Grace is currently in the top 30 but needs to reach the top 15 in order to advance. Voting ends Friday, September 20th, 2024, so make sure to put in your votes quick!
