Vista Unified Festival of the Arts 20th Anniversary

Updated: Oct 23

This past Saturday, Vista Unified celebrated the 20th Festival of the Arts anniversary! Taking place in Vista Village, it was described as an event that “celebrates the myriad of arts and music opportunities in the school district and serves as a showcase for all the schools participating” via the Vista Unified School District. The art showcased was both performing and visual, with student creations posted for all to see alongside live musical performances. Specifically, it was spread out in three sections between LampPost Pizza, the Cinepolis, and Starbucks. What was even more amazing, was that Vista Unified reported that more than 1,000 students participated in this year's festivities! One of these students in particular, was Teens Talk San Diego’s own Mandy Trinh.

Mandy, a senior at Mission Vista High School, described her piece as a comment on her experiences with maturing and getting older: “All my life I've wondered what it was like to finally grow up and be my own independent person. Now, since that time is rapidly approaching, all I long for is a chance to return to my truest form of self. My childhood. Even though I know this isn't possible, I wanted to encapsulate the feeling of leaving that bit of childhood whimsy inside the heart, no matter where I am. The black-and-white heart and hands represent this sense of maturity, this lack of childhood brightness and color, contrasting with the bright red center of the heart, representing more warmth or even rawness of the human core. The black-and-white portrait of a child depicts that childhood has left, and is a memory of the person, but is always held at the core. Childhood rips and tears the seams of the heart, wishing to be on display once again, but will forever be trapped within.” Although this will be her last year having her artwork shown at the festival, she is grateful for the years she has been able to participate. Furthermore, she let us know that this work will not only be used for this occasion, but will also be submitted in her AP Art Portfolio and the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

Overall, this event was an amazing experience for all that were involved and really created a great opportunity to show off our amazing youth. Although this year’s festival is over, next year we know that it will be even bigger and better!
